The Employee Free Choice Act:
What It Means for You
WHAT IS THE EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT?
The Employee Free Choice Act, or “card check” bill, amounts to the most radical change in labor law in more than sixty years. Card check would effectively eliminate the existing right to vote by secret ballot when choosing whether or not to unionize your workplace, and would provide a path for the federal government to determine your wages and benefits.
HOW WOULD A UNION IMPACT MY JOB?
As soon as a union collects signatures from half of your colleagues, you are immediately enrolled in a union. Having a union means:
- Paying union dues
- Participating in influencing activities including strikes
- Limits to existing flexibilities in the workplace
- Seniority, as opposed to merit, may dictate the outcome of many personnel decisions
- Employees and managers may no longer be able to work together freely to solve problems
